This is Yorkshire –
- Name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the UK and its surrounding seas
- Use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to key physical features
- Use basic geographical vocabulary to refer to key human features
- Use simple compass directions (N, S, E and W) and locational and directional language
- Devise a simple map and use and construct basic symbols in a key
- Use simple fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school and its grounds and the key human and physical features of its surrounding environment
- Significant historical events, people and places in their own locality
This half term we have been exploring our local area. We looked at our school and went for a walk around Darfield. We used our information to create maps with keys.
We looked at Yorkshire landscapes and created our own through paint. We used different strokes and techniques and mixed our pain colours using Primary coloured powder paints.
We found out about famous people in Yorkshire. One of these was ‘Guy Fawkes’. He came into our classroom where we interrogated him with our fantastic questioning skills.

Summer 2
This half term is a very busy half term! We have Sports day, Summer Fayre and transition day. We are continuing looking at Explorers and focusing on James Cook.
Year 2 really enjoyed the Summer Fayre and they loved performing their PBuzz for the parents and children.
Summer week 2 – Spellings
Summer 1
This half term, we have studied plants and looked at the different parts of a plant. We created a garden outside of our classroom, come and have a look! In Science, we completed an experiment and looked at the different things plants need to survive. Over the next few weeks, we are looking at explorers from under the sea. We have started researching James Cook and James Cameron. Next week, we are going to investigate different materials and create a submarine!
Spring 2
This half term, we have studied and researched Barnsley in the past and present. We created maps of Darfield using a simple key for physical and human landmarks. The children enjoyed walking around Darfield and studying the landmarks such as the church, library and the park.
Monday 26th February 2018
This week, we started our new Science topic, The Great Expedition! The children have researched and designed a play mat for a baby. The children have started to work in small groups to create an interactive baby mat – photos to follow soon 🙂

On the run up to SATs in Year 2, you can help your child by reading a few pages of their book every day! Try and ask your child questions about their book. Here are a few examples you might ask:
QUESTIONS:

- Why did Red Riding Hood visit Grandmother?
- What is the lemonade like?
- Which word tells you what the cake is like?

This half term, we have been looking at animals and their habitats. We have discussed living, non-living and never been alive.
In Literacy, we have been learning about Eric Carle and looking at his books. On Wednesday, we went outside to investigate the plants and help us with our descriptive writing.

Autumn 1
As part of our design and technology topic, the children have designed and created a puppet. The children have used felt and cotton to sew their puppet.

On Friday 29th September, Year 2 celebrated Roald Dahl day and they came to school dressed as their favourite book character.
- The witches, Matilda, Fantastic Mr Fox and Willy Wonka!
- Fantastic Mr Fox working hard solving math problems!
Year 2 have started playing their first musical instrument! They are the first children in Barnsley to play the pBuzz!
Year 2 have settled into their classroom very well. The children visited the school library for the first time on Friday. They enjoyed looking at the different books and sharing their favourite stories with their friends.

Year 2 have been creating some fantastic homework at home. They have designed and created a selection of musical instruments as part of our entertainment topic. The children have enjoyed sharing their homework with their friends.

Spring 1
Some more of our brilliant homework.
Over the weekend Jack and his family went for a walk. Here is what he said: ‘I went for a walk with my family we saw lots of nature.
We saw Ducks, horses, geese, a robin, a centipede and a worm under a log, and lots of trees and plants too along the river bank. We also saw some holes in the ground which might have been a habitat. We saw nests and some bird boxes in the trees. I had my wellies on but still got my trousers wet jumping in the big puddles’.
Karla also went for a walk. She said: ‘The ducks live around the lake. They eat insects, little fish and bread. They lay eggs in spring and they sit on the eggs to keep them warm untill the little ducks crack the egg and get out of the egg. The ducks have feathers so the water coudnt get inside the feathers’.
This week Sophie went for a walk with her family. Here is what she said: ‘I went on a walk with my mummy and grandma we had a good walk and saw lots of things like leafs worms trees with red things on and the river and the river had fish in it too.i really enjoyed my walk with mummy and grandma’
Tyler went for a winter walk to search for habitats.
This week Dylan went on a nature walk and took photos and videos. He talked about ducks, found birds nests and then fed the ducks.
Ava goes habitat hunting around her local area. She spotted some horses, mole hills and bird nests.
Zac and Toby went on a walk to find different animals and habitats.
Jack has created his own animal and habitat for it. Here is Jack’s leaf Woodman and it’s habitat is a wooden leaf cave.
Autumn 2
Jack says, ”Do lots of exercises and eat lots of healthy fruit to be healthy.”
Gabriella says, ”We need lots of fruit and vegetables and plenty of exercise to say healthy.”
Kacper and Ava shows us how to keep healthy!
Sophie explains how to keep healthy. She says that we need to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, drink plenty of water and get lots of exercise.
Harriett, Lucas and Jack created New and improved versions of Darfield.

What time is it?
8/3/17 – Today we looked at parts of plants and their functions. We turned some of the children in class into plants and labelled them.
14/3/17 – Today we went to Darfield Church to learn about the different symbols within the building.
We have also been finding fractions of shapes.
3/3/17 – This week we have been planting seeds to see how they grow. We are testing to see where they grow best.
2/3/17We have been practicing our bar methods this week for multiplication and division. Attached are the silly sentences that we use to remember the methods and an example of how we do them.

21/3/17 In class we have been researching work by Van Gogh. We have also had a go at painting and drawing using different techniques that he did.

14/3/17 Today we started our new topic on Van Gogh. We created our own versions of ‘Starry night’. We used oil pastels and then painted over the top with thin paint.
13/3/17 Today we had our Science Exhibition in school. Thank you to all of the parents who came. We really enjoyed sharing our baby mats and explaining all about how we had made them.
10/3/17 – Here are our final babymat creations.
7-9th March
We have been making baby mats for our science topic. Here we are in the early stages.
2/3/17 We have been using directional language in maths.
1/3/17 We have been testing materials and describing their properties. We used Venn diagrams to sort them.
31/1/17 We sorted 2D shapes into different groups and then said how we sorted them.
26/1/17 – Today we looked at finding lines of symmetry of 2D shapes. We folded paper shapes to help us.
24/1/17 We created sentences with conjunctions about the Wicked Witch of The West.
In topic time we ordered a timeline of famous explorers. We found out what each of them did.
23/1/17 Today we had a visit from The Wicked Witch of The West (and her flying Monkeys!).

We have been Incredible inventors! We have been using our thinking skills to solve real-life and online problems.
We made towers out of different materials, like marshmallows and straws, which had to hold a 200g weight.
We solved problems using the APP Pattison’s inventions.

Today we tried different foods that would traditionally be eaten at an Eid celebration. We loved it!

We found out all about weddings in other faiths. We dressed up as a Muslim bride and groom.
11th October
We are looking at famous people from Yorkshire. Today we were looking at Guy Fawkes and did some drama work about The Gunpowder Plot.

We have been looking at different maps and have been making our own. We have used directional language to navigate to different places.
