Coughs, Colds and Covid19
As we move into the Autumn Term and what is traditionally cough and flu season we will start to see lots of children who have runny noses, sore throats and other symptoms of colds or flu.
2020 has been a year like no other and when that sniff, cough, runny nose or temperature happens there will understandably be a question about if it is Coronavirus.
The main symptoms of coronavirus are:
- a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
- a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
- a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you’ve noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal
Most people with coronavirus have at least 1 of these symptoms.
To protect others, do not go to places like a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital if you have any of these symptoms. Get a test to check if you have coronavirus and stay at home until you get your result.
Children who have coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms, or who have someone in their household who does, should not attend school. This is also the case if the symptoms are only mild.
